The Angelus had rung some time since. Adam waited, pacing up and down outside its grand porch, but there was yet no sign of Seb. Having passed the morn in fruitless endeavour, discovering nobody who recognised – or would admit to recognising – either of the lads or the man in the drawings, he continued to wait, wasting yet more time. His patience was stretched as his anxiety increased. What was Seb doing? Perhaps it had been a mistake to split up. Yet he was a man, not a child. Did he need a guardian to hold his hand at every step? No. So where was the tardy fellow?

Adam began to push his way through the crowds along Bankside. The noise was such that there was little point in calling Seb’s name. He would never hear above the hucksters’ cries, the shouts of costermongers and haggling goodwives. But dogs have sharper ears, so Adam yelled out Gawain’s name instead, every few yards, hoping the creature would come trotting towards him with Seb trailing behind.

His voice was becoming strained and worry gnawed at his vitals, like a rat at a grain sack, before a familiar, black furry head with drooping ears appeared through the forest of legs. But it was plain that Gawain was not his usual lively self. His coat was filthy, bits of onion skin and parsnip peelings clinging to his fur. His head and tail were down and he seemed unsteady on his paws. Adam thought, had Gawain been a man, he might well be accounted a drunkard.

‘What’s amiss with you, eh?’ Adam crouched to make certain the animal was unhurt. There was no sign of any injury. ‘Where’s Seb? Lost your master, eh? Why is he not with you? Where’s that foolish cousin of mine?’ He fondled the dog’s ears and Gawain responded with a half-hearted tail wag. ‘Gawain, go find Seb!’

The dog looked up at him with lack-lustre eyes, as if questioning the need.

‘Aye, go on now. Find Seb,’ Adam insisted.

Gawain turned back, along Bankside, walking as though he had aged a decade in the last few hours. All Adam’s chivvying could not make the creature hasten in the least. He feared the dog was sickening but Seb’s absence was a far greater concern.
